Pile SnapJackets

A failing piling does not always mean a failing dock. SnapJackets restore the piling in place, without tearing out the structure sitting on it.

What a SnapJacket does

Pilings deteriorate in the splash zone and below the waterline — the two places nobody looks. Marine borers work through wood from the outside in, and concrete pilings spall as the rebar inside them corrodes and expands.

A SnapJacket is a fibreglass jacket that wraps the damaged section and is filled with grout, forming a new structural surround bonded to what is left of the original pile. The load path is restored without pulling the pile and rebuilding everything above it.

When it is the right repair

It is not the answer for every pile — and we will say so when it is not.

  • Deterioration confined to the splash zone or just below the waterline
  • Enough sound material left in the pile core to bond to
  • Structure above is otherwise sound and worth preserving
  • Access allows working around the pile at water level

Questions

How long does a SnapJacket last?

The jacket itself is fibreglass and does not rot or corrode, and the grout surround protects the original pile from further borer and oxygen exposure. Properly installed, it is a long-term structural repair rather than a patch — but it depends on there being sound material to bond to, which is what the inspection determines.

Is it cheaper than replacing pilings?

Almost always, because replacing a pile under an existing dock means dismantling the structure above it. The comparison we will give you is the honest one: jacket cost now versus what a pile replacement would cost if the deterioration is too far along.
