What makes a seawall last
Most of a seawall's working life happens where you cannot see it. The panels are the visible part, but the tiebacks anchoring the wall back into the soil, the deadmen those tiebacks connect to, the filter fabric keeping backfill from washing through joints, and the weep holes letting groundwater out are what actually determine whether the wall is still straight in twenty years.
Walls fail when water gets to move soil. Every element we install is aimed at that one problem.
What installation includes
- Survey, engineering and the county and state permit packet
- Removal or preparation of the existing structure where needed
- Vinyl, concrete or composite panel systems driven to design depth
- Tiebacks, deadmen and whalers sized to the retained height
- Filter fabric, drainage and weep holes to relieve groundwater
- Concrete cap, finished to tie into your deck, lawn or dock
- Backfill, compaction and site restoration
Timeline
Seawall permitting can involve county or municipal review, state submerged-lands paperwork and sometimes federal review. Timing and construction scheduling depend on the parcel and proposed work.
Questions
Vinyl, concrete or rip-rap?
Vinyl panel systems are the common choice on residential canals: they do not corrode, they install cleanly and they carry a long service life. Concrete suits higher retained heights and more exposed frontage. Rip-rap is a shoreline treatment rather than a retaining structure and suits properties where the bank can be sloped. We will tell you which your frontage actually calls for.
How long does seawall permitting take?
Timing depends on the parcel, scope and reviewing agencies. The written proposal should identify which survey, design and permit-coordination tasks are included for the project.
